Success Story - Nur Alia Zainal Abidin
Alia, who loves reading and baking since high school, is one of the first students to complete her ACCA qualification under the MyPAC programme. She shares with us her inspirations and strengths.
1. Tell us about your background?
I did my Diploma and Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in UiTM. I am the first in my family to pursue ACCA. I just started my career as an Audit Associate in an audit firm, BDO since 1st of July 2015.
2. What motivated you to pursue the ACCA Qualification?
After I graduated from UiTM with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, I realized that there were too many graduates with the same qualification competing to enter the workforce. I needed to have a competitive advantage, and I know ACCA will let me climb the career ladder faster.
3. What were the main challenges you had to face during the course?
I was close to my family, so one of the bigger challenges was being homesick and terribly missing them and friends. Being Malaysian, I also missed food from home very much. As for my studies, I had had to take 3 papers per term because of visa requirements so time-management was a challenge. I started revising very early in order to cover the syllabus and practised answering the questions many times. When I came back, I was left with 1 more paper to go, and I was looking for options to complete the ACCA Qualification.
4. How did you come to know about MyPAC?
I got to know about MyPAC from my dad, and he had received it from a Whatsapp message. I took his advice and went for MyPAC’s first meeting.
5. How has MyPAC helped you with the ACCA qualification?
MyPAC sponsored my online tuition with BPP. The online course was very beneficial to me because the tutors were very helpful whenever I emailed them with questions. The pre-recorded classes had very clear and detailed explanations. Aside from that, MyPAC buddies always motivated me to submit my tests online to BPP and they also constantly asked about my progress. Their constant reminders and engagement really set study pace
6. What are your future plans?
I plan to work in BDO for 3 years and fulfill the ACCA PER (Practical Experience Requirement). I am a Petronas scholar, so, once I am admitted as ACCA and MIA member, I will serve my bond immediately. I plan to join the Internal Audit Department since that is my main passion.
7. What advice would you give to future MyPAC candidates?
Look at failures as opportunity to become better in the future. What sets us apart from other people is how we handle failure. Also, everybody have their own study technique. We shouldn’t follow others, we must choose what suits us best and stick with it.
